SITTING ROOM, EVENING.
A man of 54 and a woman of 46 sit on the sofa in their pyjamas. A child of four plays with a handheld games console on the floor.
MAN
Don’t take the cordless off its base when you’re not using it, it drains the battery.
WOMAN
Sorry.
The man dials a number on the cordless phone.
MAN
Yanni, good evening. Happy birthday. Yes. No, I just got home. Yanni, I’m afraid we won’t be able to make it tonight after all. She just called to say she’s got a lot of work at the office and that she’s going to be late, and I’m alone with the little one. Yes, it really is a shame. We really wanted to, it’s been quite some time since we last saw you, I think. Yes, it really is a shame. Listen, about your car tyres, you really must change them as soon as possible. They’re the most important thing of all, Yanni, the tyres. They grip the vehicle to the road. You understand. No. About two years ago. Whenever you like, just give me a call. Happy birthday again, I hope to see you and catch up some other time. Please give your wife and children my love. I’ll tell her. Have a good night. That’s the sound of the battery dying. The cordless. Goodnight, Yanni. Bye-bye.
WOMAN
Did you want to go?
MAN
No.
WOMAN
I’ll go if you want.
MAN
I just told him we’re not going.
The man puts the phone back on its base.
WOMAN
If you want, we could go. I don’t mind.
MAN
I don’t want to go. This thing with the phone, please, I don’t want it happening again. There’s no reason for the phone to be off its base for long. I understand that the cordless handset is convenient exactly because you can have it with you around the house, but there are limits. I mean, if the cordless is with you in the kitchen, but it’s out of battery, then what’s the point? You talk to someone. When you’re done, put it back in its place and then, when it rings again or when you want to make another call, go back and get it.
